Biography

I was really pleased the get Stephen's work here at North Castle - we had been lacking some longer drama stories and his work is great to sink your teeth into. His work covers most of the Zelda titles and he writes great with either canon characters like Link and Zelda, or original ones. I will definitely look forward to reading a sequal to 'Twighlight Descent' if that ever happens, since its my favourite piece of work by Stephen.

  • Quick Q&A

    1. So most importantly, how did you get into the Legend of Zelda?

I got into Zelda back in 1993, when I got an SNES, my first gaming system. Super Mario World and Zelda: A Link to the Past were the two games I got with it. Not a bad start huh?

    2. And what's your favourite game in the series?

My favorite game in the series is Ocarina of Time, followed closely by A Link to the Past and Twilight Princess. The three games come from different eras, but they were all outstanding. Ocarina is #1 because it had a great storyline, amazing graphics and gameplay, and probably the greatest character cast in the history of video games.

    3. Why did you choose The Legend of Zelda to devote so much of your creative energy to?

I just fell in love with the franchise's medieval feel. It really takes you back to a different era, when power, courage, and wisdom could truly guide somebody to greatness, or ruin. And there are so many characters in the franchise with deep backgrounds, like Saria, Darunia, and Nabooru to name a few, that there is almost limitless potential for a fanfiction writer.

    4. What are the main influences for your work?

I've written about many Legend of Zelda titles. I've done a few on post-Ocarina Hyrule, but Twilight Hyrule, Termina, and ALttP's dark world are also represented. I've written stories about many characters, ranging from the heavy hitters like Link and Zelda, to middling characters like Kafei and Agahnim, all the way to ordinary hyrulian citizens, like Soren and Shira. Some of my original characters have influences in the people of my life, most notably my parents, my girlfriend, and my brother.

    5. What is your favourite piece of work you've done, and why?

It's hard to say. If you really need one, I'd go with Twilight Descent. In this particular story, you have a brother and sister team attempting to save their mother after the twilight invasion left Hyrule Castle Town in shambles. This story was unique in that it did not follow the storyline of one of the Zelda games directly, rather, it was more of a storyline within a storyline. You had the young, brave adventurers fulfilling their own destiny at a time when Link, Zelda, and Midna were all doing their own thing. The character development in this story, I feel, is the deepest I've ever gone. For those reasons I like this story best.

    6. Who is your favourite character to write/draw, and why?

I really like to write about Princess Zelda. A lot of people see her as a simple damsel in distress, but there is much more to her than meets even the "eye of truth." She is usually quite kind and good-mannered, but her wisdom and magical powers can bring out a very thoughtful, cunning, even cold attitude. Yes she gets captured, but it's usually part of a more elaborate plan to save the kingdom, as evidenced by her seven years on the run in Ocarina of Time, or her selfless surrender that saved hundreds in Twilight Princess

    7. Are there any fan writers/artists that you admire?

I have seen many good works over the years. I do admire a few individuals, The Missing Link probably being the foremost, although Juliet & Kirsty Singleton, along with other members of the North Castle community are quite skilled. I admire Megan O’Shea too as she has one of best writing tutorials you’ll find outside of a formal English class. Some of the humor section writers are downright funny.

    8. How did you find North Castle?

I was actually on The Missing Link’s site, The Grand Adventures, and I saw a link to North Castle. TML had plugged it as a great site for fanfiction, so I came here.

    9. Why did you decide to post your work at North Castle?

I felt like getting my stories out in the open. It’s no fun keeping them to yourself, and north castle is a great place to present your work.

    10. Finally, any plans for the future regarding your work?

I’m currently working on a longer story, one based on the SNES game Illusion of Gaia. It’s called Around the World in 100 Days, and it should be complete by the end of 2008. Once I’m done with that, I might return to Zelda fanfiction, though I’m not entirely sure what to do next. Some people have clamoured for a sequel to Twilight Descent, so I might see about that. I need another good original idea though. It’s been awhile.
