I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)

By Juliet A. Singleton

Author's Note:

A Zelda songfic based on my favourite song by my all-time favourite rock and roll star, the mighty, most magnificent Meat Loaf :D Extended version of course. It really annoys me when it gets shortened. It's not his fault he writes long songs! It's told from Link's PoV and of course, as ever, based on the Z1-2/cartoon incarnation of our favourite couple :)

I'd never tell you one lie, I'd never let you down
I'd never leave, I'd be the one who'd always be around
Baby give me a chance...

From the very moment I saw her, I knew that I was in love. She is the most beautiful woman in the whole entire world. I can't stop thinking about her and I'd do anything for her. Anything at all. And that's the truth. She's the only reason I decided to stick around in Hyrule. Else who knows where I might have ended up? When I set out from Catalia, I wanted to travel the entire world, seeking my fortune. But then I met her and I fell hopelessly in love. Meeting Zelda changed everything in my life.

I'd pull the sun out from the sky to light your darkest night
I wouldn't let one drop of rain fall down into your life
Put your heart in my hands

This morning is a morning like any other. As I stroll through North Castle's courtyard, I can't help but gaze up at the north-eastern tower, hoping to perhaps catch a glimpse of her upon the balcony. She often stands out there early in the morning, her long golden hair blowing lightly in the breeze, gleaming in the sunlight. I can't help but admire her.

Baby believe me, I could never do you wrong
And I would never paint your world blue
And if sometimes it seems I must have lost mind
I might be crazy but I'm crazy about you...

I'd lie for you and that's the truth
Do anything you ask me to
I'd even sell my soul for you
I'd do it all for you
If you'd just believe in me

The only problem is, she just brushes off my feeble attempts to profess my love and devotion. But how I really do love her! She doesn't believe me. Or maybe, as I hope, she just pretends to. I can see the pretty blush on her face whenever I tell her. How she looks away shyly and just laughs. "Oh Link, don't be so silly!"
"But Princess..."
"But nothing, Link! You're just saying that so I'll kiss you!" I grin at her.
"Well, yeah, I do want to kiss you but..."
"Ooh, you're so annoying!" she yelled, her green eyes flashing angrily. My shoulders slump in defeat and I hold out my hands in exasperation. "Well, excuuuuse me, Princess!" She merely pouts and turns to stomp away like she usually does. I know it's all just a front, though. I'm sure that she really likes me too. She's just too proud to admit it. One day, I'll convince her. Today. I know that I can't wait any longer to know how she feels.

Just take a look in my eyes, you'll see a love that's blind
Just take a hold of my hand, I'll take you to paradise
Ain't a star that's too far...

Your every wish will be a wish that I will make come true
And if you want the moon I swear I'll bring it down for you
Let me into your heart...

I've never felt this way before but it's almost like its destiny. It was fate that made me bump into Impa that day, fate that I should be the one to rescue Hyrule from Ganon's evil plans. Destiny has tied me to Zelda and she to me. The Triforce brought us together, Courage and Wisdom to fight against Power. To fight against Ganon. I'll do anything to help her, to please her. To make her happy.

As I walk along the path I notice some pretty blooms over spilling from their beds. Their fragrant scent filled my nostrils as I bent down to look more closely at them. If there's one thing that Zelda loves, it's flowers. She's always picking them for her room and her balcony is planted with all many of pretty and delicate flora. On impulse, I picked a few, making a sizeable bouquet. I knew what I was going to do. I'd surprise her with the flowers, and while she was feeling happy about them, I'd tell her. Straight out. No jokes, no stupid flirtations. I'd just come out and tell her that I loved her, pure and simple.

Believe me baby got your name carved on my soul
'Cause you're the only one that I'll give it to
Go let 'em say that I'm I fool to act this way
'Cause if I'm crazy, I'm just crazy 'bout you...

I'd lie for you and that's the truth

Do anything you ask me to

I'd even sell my soul for you

I'd do it all for you

If you'd just believe in me

I'd lie for you and that's the truth
Move mountains if you want me to
I'd walk across the fire for you
I'd walk on the wild for you
If you'd just believe in me...

Steeling myself, I ran up the tower steps, right to the summit. Up to Zelda's room. The door was already slightly ajar, but I knocked anyway.
"Who is it?" called out the Princess, in her mellifluous voice.
"It's just me," I called back cheerfully, hoping that she'd be in a good mood. A few moments later she stood there in the doorway, attired in one of her pretty dresses. This one was a cream silk one with a simple golden sash pulling it in at the waist. Her green eyes sparkled and she smiled as she saw me.
"Good morning Link, to what do I owe the pleasure?" she teased, stepping aside to let me in. I couldn't help but blush a little. Sometimes, she makes me really nervous. Particularly today. I quickly revealed my hand-picked bouquet, grinning stupidly.
"Uhh I picked these for you," I said, not really knowing what else to say. She gave me a small smile.
"Oh, flowers. For me?" she said, laughing a little. She took them and held them close, inhaling their sweet perfume. "That's really sweet of you, Link. They're beautiful." She looked a little embarrassed. We didn't know what to say to each other.
"Not as beautiful as you," I finally managed to say, immediately wishing I hadn't. She turned away slightly.
"Ah... Link... I'm not that pretty.... I don't know why you think I'm pretty..." I stood there, shoving my hands in my pockets.
"You are. You're beautiful," I repeated. She walked away across the room towards the balcony and walked outside. I quickly followed her.

Out in the open air she looked across at me, smiling slightly.
"You aren't bad yourself, you know," she admitted shyly. I couldn't help but smile back, feeling pleased at her words. I fought the urge to respond with one of my usual, cocky replies. Perhaps that was were I was going wrong. I'd joke around, because it was the only way I knew how to flirt, and she'd end up getting angry. "Although," she added critically, "you could do with a haircut." I gave her a hurt look.
"I like my hair," I replied, running a hand through it self-consciously. Maybe it was a little wild, but... it grew so fast I'd given up trying to control it years ago. It was part of me, part of my style. I couldn't bear to be all immaculately coifed and groomed like those pompous princes who liked to call on Zelda so much. She immediately looked sorry for her words and stepped across to me, smiling.
"Here, look," she said, reaching up to part it a little more neatly. My heart skipped a beat just at her very closeness. I didn't want her to stop.
"Zel, I have to tell you something," I finally managed to choke out.
"Huh? What's wrong Link?" she asked, looking surprised at my evidently strange behaviour.
"I... I love you Zelda!" I blurted out. Her green eyes widened in surprise.
"Oh Link, I wish you'd stop saying that," she said. I wasn't about to give up. Not this time.

And you will never see a day I'll ever break your heart
You'll see the sky fall down before it ever gets that far
I'll show you heaven every second that you're in my arms
Baby I'm crazy, but I'm crazy about you!

"Honestly Zel, I love you. I really do. Why won't you believe me?" I pleaded, gazing into her beautiful green eyes and clasping her dainty hand in my own. A faint blush spread across her cheeks and she frowned, dropping her gaze to the ground.
"Link, don't...." she murmured.
"Just let me in. I promise I'll never hurt you. Never," I said seriously. I'd never meant something so much in my entire life. "I love you too much," I added, running my other hand under her delicate chin, lifting it so that our eyes met once more. She looks so pretty when she blushes. She managed a small smile. "I loved you from the moment we met," I continued, hope rising in my heart at her reaction. We were only inches apart now. Close enough to kiss... "Believe me, believe me that it's true," I begged. "I can't stop thinking of you and how much I want you to love me back. Please say you love me Zel, please. Because if you don't, I'm not sure if I can keep on living this way. I've fallen for you so deeply." We were gazing into each other's eyes now.
"Oh Link, I never realised... I... uh.... Oh gosh..." she murmured, those spots of colour rushing to her cheeks once more.
"Do you love me?" I pressed.
"I..." she started trailing off, lost for words.
"I'll do anything for you. Anything to make you happy. Anything to make you love me the way I love you," I continued bravely.

I'd lie for you and that's the truth
Move mountains if you want me to
I'd walk across the fire for you
I'd walk on the wild for you
If you'd just believe in me....

We had fallen into each other's arms, we were closer than we'd ever been. I could feel her heart beating as fast as mine as we held each other tightly.
"You don't have to do anything to make me love you Link," she whispered. "You never needed to. Just being you is enough for me..." It was all I could do not to lose control at her words.
"Oh Zel..."
"Link..."

I'd walk across the wild for you...

"Can I kiss you?" I asked. I could hardly dare to breathe.

Move mountains if you want me to...

"Do you even have to ask me?" she murmured back, smiling hopefully.

I'd walk across the fire for you...

I smiled back at her, pulling her as close to me as I could. My free hand entangled in her soft golden hair. This was it. The moment I had been dreaming about for so long...

Do anything you asked me to...

She caressed the sensitive nape of my neck, leaning even closer to me. We both closed our eyes.

I'd lie for you...

And then, we kissed. I knew from that moment I would never, ever let her go.

And that's the truth
Do anything you asked me to
I'd even sell my soul for you
I'd do it all for you
If you'd just believe in me

I'd lie for you and that's the truth
Move mountains if you want me to
I'd walk across the fire for you
I'd walk on the wild for you
If you'd just believe in me...

I'd lie for you and that's the truth
