~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I stay up and think of you
And I wish on a star
That somewhere you are thinking of me too....
-----------------------
Princess Zelda sighed as she sat on her window sill late one night. From her tower room in Hyrule Castle she could see clear over to the Lost Woods, where her friend Link still lived among the Kokiri children, even though he was seventeen and pretty much grown up.
She wondered if she should have sent him back to his childhood after he helped her send Ganon to the Evil Realm. It seemed like they'd been falling in love--but she'd wanted him to regain the seven years he'd lost.
Now they were seventeen again. As far as Zelda knew Link had never had a girlfriend, and she wouldn't mind being his first. She was very much in love with him. Only she and Link knew about what had happened in that alternate time, and she remembered watching him even as she trained as Sheik, disguised so Ganondorf wouldn't find her. She'd loved him then too.
She wondered if Link was thinking about her. By now he was probably sound asleep in his treehouse.
-------------------------
'Cause I'm dreaming of you tonight
'Til tomorrow I'll be holding you tight
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
Than here in my room dreaming about you and me....
---------------------------
Zelda had been dreaming about Link quite a lot. Oftentimes she'd be staring off into space, just thinking about the young man with whom she was deeply in love. She thought of his deep blue eyes, his unruly blond bangs. He was the nicest boy--young man now--she'd ever met. He was sensitive, intelligent, and courteous--but with a hint of mischief.
She wondered what it would be like to kiss him, to hold him, to have him hold her and tell her that he loved her. In her dreams he did so, and she wanted it to be reality. It was one time where she hoped that it was a prophetic dream rather than a "normal" dream that she was having.
Link was training with the captain of Zelda's army, and he'd be here at the castle tomorrow. She just hoped that she'd be able to tell him her feelings before he found another girl.
Finally Zelda got into bed, and, still dreaming of Link, she drifted off to sleep.
----------------------
Wonder if you ever see me and I wonder if you know I'm there
If you looked in my eyes
Would you see what's inside
Would you even care?
-----------------------
That morning, Zelda sat out in the courtyard, where Link would be training. Sure enough, right on schedule, he came loping up. "Hi, Princess," said Link as he walked up to her.
"Link...you can call me Zelda," she said, laughing lightly. "All my friends do...."
"Well, I just like to give you the respect you deserve," he said as he sat down next to her.
"Thanks, I really appreciate that," Zelda told him.
The captain of the Hylian army put in his appearance. "Well, Zel...gotta go through this training. Never know if or when Hyrule will need protecting again," he said, smiling at her. He got up.
---------------------------
I just wanna hold you close but so far
All I have are dreams of you
So I wait for the day and the courage to say
How much I love you
---------------------------
Zelda watched as Link went through his training. He sure was a lot tougher physically than he looked, Zelda thought. She was attracted to him physically as well as emotionally and romantically. He was just perfect, she thought. She didn't even care that he wasn't royalty. It didn't matter to her. He was her hero. He'd gone through a lot for her and hadn't even complained. In fact, in that other timeline, when he'd awakened from his seven-year sleep, when he'd seen her as Sheik, the first thing he'd done was ask about her.
She wanted so much to tell him how much she loved him. She had never been so sure about anything in her entire life. Zelda knew that she wanted to be with Link, eventually be his wife.
Soon his session was over and he wanted to go riding on Epona. "Well, Zelda, I must be going for now. The Kokiris love that Lon Lon milk and I'm going to go get them some." He sounded amused.
Impulsively, Zelda hugged him. "Take care of yourself Link," she told him.
Link returned the hug. "Of course I will," he said. As they parted his hands lingered on her shoulders; then he turned and mounted Epona. "See you tomorrow, Zel." He waved as he rode off.
------------------------
I'll be dreaming of you tonight
'Til tomorrow I'll be holding you tight
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
Than here in my room dreaming about you and me
---------------------------
That evening Zelda reviewed the day's events in her mind, playing them and replaying them. The way he'd continued to hold her after their hug today--could it mean something?
------------------------------
I can't stop dreaming of you
I can't stop dreaming
I can't stop dreaming of you
--------------------------------
She couldn't get Link out of her head. They'd more or less grown up together; they'd remembered the alternate timeline and as a result Link and Zelda had been friends and playmates since they were ten. So he wouldn't have to sneak into the castle anymore, Zelda had ordered her guards to let him in anytime, day or night. Poor Link used to have problems with Mido, the Kokiri boss, but since he'd grown he'd been having less problems. Zelda supposed that even Mido knew when to quit, since Link was nearly twice his size now.
Lately, though, Zelda had harbored these romantic feelings. Link appeared in her dreams and she couldn't stop watching him whenever he was around.
She remembered when they were ten and Link had gone on a search for Navi, his guardian fairy. When he came back a little later, he'd told her about a land called Termina and how he'd used the Ocarina of Time she'd given him to save that land from the evil powers of Majora's Mask. She smiled at the memory. That was her Link--always helpful. He'd followed that Skull Kid to Termina to get back his ocarina and Epona. He could have just left--but he'd chosen to save the land from certain destruction.
It was possible that she'd loved him then. Of course they'd only been children....
------------------------
Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I stay up and think of you
And I still can't believe
That you came up to me and said
I love you
I love you too
---------------------------
The following day, Link arrived a little early. "Um, Zelda, I want to talk to you," he said as they stood out in the courtyard. "I kind of need your help. See, there's this girl I think I'm in love with."
"Who?" asked Zelda. Her heart seemed to stop.
"Someone you know," said Link. "She's been watching me a lot and I think she feels the same way about me. I want you to see her--and tell me what you think."
What? What was this?
"Oh--okay, sure," said Zelda, trying hard to hide her disappointment.
Link led her into the castle. Zelda was confused. Who could he possibly have fallen in love with here?
They stopped in front of a mirror. "She's right there," said Link, pointing at Zelda's reflection.
"Me? Really?" asked Zelda.
Link nodded. "I've been thinking about you a lot but I wasn't entirely sure how you felt about me," he said. "Lately I've noticed you watching me. I see the look in your eyes when you do--it looks like the look in my eyes when I watch you. I thought it was about time to tell you how I felt about you...I could feel some tension."
"How do you feel about me?"
Link looked at her. "I love you." He gently drew her into his arms and kissed her.
"I love you too, Link," Zelda said as she wound her arms around his neck and gave him another kiss.
"I was just wondering...well, I'd like you to be my wife. Will you marry me?" asked Link, sounding timid, like the mild-mannered child he'd been.
"This is so sudden--!" Zelda gasped. "But--I've known you for almost half my life...yes, Link, yes, I'll marry you."
Link gave her another kiss. "Let's get married as soon as possible. I still want us to have a nice big wedding...you deserve it, being a princess and everything...."
"You deserve it because you're my hero," Zelda told him.
-------------------------------
Now I'm dreaming with you tonight
'Til tomorrow and for all of my life
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
Than here in my room dreaming with you endlessly....
---------------------------------
Two weeks later Link and Zelda were married in a grand ceremony, and that night, Zelda lay in Link's arms, having just made love with him. She smiled as she gave him another kiss and cuddled up to him.
"I feel we belong together," Link murmured as he hugged Zelda.
"We do," Zelda told him.
Link fell asleep, a smile on his handsome face. Zelda moved closer to him, glad that at last she was his wife. She never wanted to let him go. She would always love him, for the rest of her life, with all her heart and soul.
